Arlington is fast becoming the focal point of scientific research for the defense and homeland security industries. The Ballston area has the highest concentration of scientific research agencies in the region, anchored by the National Science Foundation, DARPA, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research and several top university-related institutes including Virginia Tech's new research center set to deliver in late 2010. "The anticipated DARPA relocation to a new office facility at Founders Square in the Ballston neighborhood will ensure that cutting edge research firms remain, and continue to grow within Arlington", says Arlington County Board Chair, Barbara Favola. "Arlington's smart-growth, transit-oriented environment attracts the best and the brightest workforce and creates the kind of synergy that research agencies thrive upon. I am delighted that government agencies, academia and the private sector are an integral part of this research hub."
