What Does A LEED Certification Mean?

Published April 25, 2019

With another Earth Day come and gone, we wanted to take this opportunity to talk about LEED certifications and the U.S. Green Building Council. With many new development projects, you may see the following symbol or a variation of the symbol and wonder what it means:

LEED stems from the U.S. Green Building Council and as their website states:

“LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building, community and home project types, LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.

LEED works for all buildings—from homes to corporate headquarters—at all phases of development. Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several areas that address sustainability issues. Based on the number of points achieved, a project then receives one of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

LEED-certified buildings are resource efficient. They use less water and energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As an added bonus, they save money.” – USGBC

The Shooshan Company’s development projects must go through certain qualifications to earn a LEED rating. These ratings are also available for:

  • Building Design and Construction
  • Interior Design and Construction
  • Building Operations and Maintenance
  • Neighborhood Development
  • Homes

It is a great achievement to earn any of the LEED certifications, something we at The Shooshan Company have been honored with in many of our projects including The View at Liberty Center, Residence Inn by Marriott and more.
